Fall Busiest Time For Scoring Scholarship Dollars

We’re about to enter the peak time for applying for scholarships according to Scholarship America. Scholarship America is the  nation’s largest provider of scholarships in the country and says that its advising high school students and college students to be creative in their search for scholarship dollars because September, October and November are actually the busiest months for applying for aid. It’s often a very competitive field as tuition reaches record-highs.

Experts say students should continue their search even after the start of the school year. “There are nearly $3 billion in scholarships available each year through corporations, foundations and community groups, and many of them start accepting applications in September,” said Lauren Segal in a news release, president and CEO of Scholarship America. “With student loan debt at nearly $1 trillion, where it has actually surpassed credit card debt for the second year in a row, it is more important than ever for students in high school and post-secondary schools to take the time, do their homework and start at the beginning of the school year when most of the scholarship applications open up.”

In 2010 Scholarship America says it provided roughly $200 million to more than 100,000 students. “As you plan for the future and choose which post-secondary option is right for you, be realistic about how much debt you can take on,” Segal said. “Think about your long-term goals, and how scholarships can help you cover the cost of your education.” Common myths are that scholarships are only for high school students when in reality there are many opportunities for those considering grad school or for older adults wanting to further their education. You don’t need a 4.0 either since some scholarships are more interested in talents, passions and volunteerism.
