What To Do About Debt If Unemployed

Being in debt is bad at the best of times, but its even worse when youre unemployed as well.  No need to worry though, its not impossible to lower your debt when youre out of work.

Here are a few pointers to help you with a difficult financial situation:

5. Get A Job As Soon As Possible

Its extremely obvious but you need to get a job as fast as possible. You need a job for two reasons, firstly to reduce your current debt and secondly to make sure you dont get into further debt.  Dont be put off by jobs that you consider to be beneath you. When youre in debt and unemployed, you need to take any job that comes your way.

Visit your local job centre two or three times a week at least. Constantly sendyou’re your resume, the worst thing you can do is stop looking and become stagnate.

Unemployment benefits can greatly reduce the strain that debt and joblessness has on you.   

3. Prioritize Your Bills

If youre in debt and out of work, the amount of money you have per month will be much lower but youll have the same overhead.  You dont want to wake up without electricity and water and you certainly need a roof over your head.  Pay the essentials first.

2. Lower Your Overhead

Its essential that you lower your overhead when youre not working. As your income drops, your spending must drop accordingly.  This means getting rid of expenses that arent vital. You really just need to be left with the bills for your running your home and for food.  If youre serious about coping with your debt, you need to say goodbye to all luxuries.

1. Sell, Sell, Sell

Make the most of the valuable assets you might have. If youre running dangerously low on cash then consider selling your valuables.  If you have to sell personal items, remember they are only things that can be replaced.
